Introducing Tosaya: A Hidden Gem of Japanese Cuisine in Kuala Lumpur
Navigating through the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, one might be surprised to find Tosaya nestled among shop lots, banks, and eateries. This unassuming Japanese restaurant is a delightful surprise waiting to tantalize your taste buds. Located at 12, Jalan Midah 1, Taman Midah 56000, Tosaya beckons you to step inside and discover a world of authentic flavors.
As I strolled into the restaurant, the warm and inviting atmosphere charted a path from the chaos of construction nearby to a culinary oasis. Despite the challenges of parking in the area, the friendly staff greeted us with smiles, ready to guide us to a menu brimming with enticing options.
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the katsudon set, accompanied by perfectly executed gyoza. The first bite of the katsudon revealed a harmonious blend of flavors, where the deep-fried pork cutlet had just the right texture—not too thin and not overly thick. It harmonized beautifully with the fluffy egg and fragrant chopped onions, proving that Tosaya's kitchen holds mastery over comfort food that warms the soul.
Next, the gyoza arrived on a hot plate—a presentation that added an element of surprise. Each bite transported me on a delightful journey of taste. The delicate skin held a succulent blend of meat and vegetables, bursting with flavor, while the crispness of the exterior complemented the moist filling perfectly. As someone who has attempted to recreate gyoza at home, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the skill and expertise that went into each piece served at Tosaya.
No meal would be complete without a sweet finale. My scoop of matcha ice-cream was not just a dessert; it was a sublime experience. Topped with a dollop of red bean paste, the ice-cream struck a perfect balance of not too hard and not too soft. The earthy notes of green tea were prominent but not overly sweet, confirming my fiancé’s high praise. Undoubtedly, Tosaya’s matcha ice-cream is a standout that deserves every bit of acclaim it receives.
In conclusion, Tosaya is more than just a restaurant; it’s an enlightening culinary experience. Whether you're a seasoned devotee of Japanese cuisine or a curious newcomer, this gem offers a refreshing escape into flavors that blend tradition with excellence.
So next time you find yourself near the construction site in Taman Midah, take a detour to Tosaya. Enjoy a meal that will leave you pleasantly surprised and craving more.
“ Hidden among shop lots, banks, eateries and a MRT station in construction, lies a Japanese restaurant called Tosaya. Who would assume that there would be a Japanese restaurant be opened in a place like this. I wouldn't, at first. Even if there is, I would think the food will not be very delicious. I was convinced by my fiance to give it a try. She stays nearby and claimed that their matcha ice-cream is the best that she had tried. So we went and I did not have much expectations for the food. I rather expect for the worst than be disappointed after. One evening, we went to Tosaya for dinner. Parking can be a challenge in the area, so be patience. Parking is an issue everywhere we go. The staff who were in charge to show us to our seats were polite and friendly. I was amazed by the selections they had in their menu. But yet, I wasn't sure of how would it turn out to be, since the images in the menu were for illustration purpose only. I ordered a katsudon set with a side of gyoza. The price seems reasonable. The green tea was good though. Not too hot, so it wasn't difficult to drink immediately. The food arrived in less than 10 minutes, and it smelled really good plus the portion was reasonable for the price. "Itadakimasu!" I took my first bite of the deep fried pork cutlet and it was so delicious. The pork meat wasn't too thin that I couldn't taste the meat nor it was too thick that the meat would become too tough to chew. It was a perfect balance, and it went well with the battered egg and chopped onions. Then the gyoza arrived in a hot plate. Something I have not seen served in such manner before. I took a piece and dip into the vinegar for the gyoza. Upon chewing the gyoza, the gyoza's skin felt soft, at the same time crispy as the filling of meat and vegetable came out onto my tongue. I could taste it so well. The filling wasn't dry, it was moist and cooked. i have tried making gyoza before, and it take skills to make them like how Tosaya's chef did. Hats off for the chef at Tosaya for making such brilliant gyoza and katsudon. Lastly, I had a scoop of matcha ice-cream. Let's see how great is the ice-cream. It was served with red bean paste. It looked mouthwatering. I took a scoop at it, and wow. I was mindblown. The ice-cream wasn't too frozen nor was it too soft. I could taste the green tea and it wasn't very sweet. I can now agree with my fiance that Tosaya matcha ice-cream is the bomb! ”
